Eighteenth Sunday of the Year
Last Sunday we saw how Jesus gave bread to the people in the wilderness. But when they came back the next day for more he said to them ‘do not work for perishable food, but for the food that endures to eternal life.’ Today we pray for that spiritual food, the food that only God can give us.
Theme of the Weekend Readings: God gives food to the hungry and comfort to those who lose their way in life.
First Reading: God feeds his people in the wilderness.
Second Reading: St Paul urges his followers to live their lives in a new way.
Gospel: Jesus tells us to work for the food that lasts forever, the Bread of Life.
Friday: No Mass

World Meeting of Families; Official Family Prayer
God, our Father, We are brothers and sisters in Jesus your Son
One family, in the Spirit of your love.
Bless us with the joy of love.
Make us patient and kind, gentle and generous,
welcoming to those in need.
Help us to live your forgiveness and peace.
Protect all families with your loving care,
Especially those for whom we now pray:
[We pause and remember family
members and others by name].
Increase our faith, strengthen our hope,
Keep us safe in your love,
Make us always grateful for the gift of life that we share.
This we ask, through Christ our Lord,

Discovering one’s own riches
In my life I have lived on the shady side of the road
I have watched my neighbours’ gardens across the way
Revelling in the sunshine
I felt I was poor and needed my neighbours’ help
And from door to door I went in my need
Asking for help
The more people gave me from their abundance,
The more I became aware of my beggar’s bowl.
Till one morning I awoke from my sleep
At the sudden knocking at my door
And you came and asked for alms.
I broke open the lid of my chest at your request
And was startled to find within that I possessed wealth
Wisdom: “Our Heavenly Father never takes anything from his children unless he means to give them something better.”
Humour: The young are always ready to give those who are older than themselves the full benefit of their experience!
