First Sunday of Lent

On Ash Wednesday we set out on the journey of Lent, a journey that will bring us to Holy Week and Easter. Lent calls us to expand our hearts and to live more fully the message of love.  In to-day’s Gospel we see Jesus struggling against temptation. Because Jesus struggled he understands our struggles.

Theme of the Weekend Readings: We pray that God who supported his people down the ages will support us on our journey through Lent.

First Reading:  Moses explains their origins to the Chosen People.

Second Reading: Saint Paul explains the importance of Christ’s Resurrection.

Gospel:  The Temptations Jesus endured in the desert are described.

Wednesday & Friday:             9.30a.m.

Thursday:                                  9.45a.m

Trocaire: The focus of this year’s Trocaire Lenten Campaign is on the global water crisis and on how   Trocaire is working with communities in Third World countries to help them gain access to clean water. We are all asked to play our part! We are asked to do    without something each day so that what we save can be donated to charities like Trocaire.

Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament takes place in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel every Wednesday morning from 10am to 12pm. All are welcome to attend. For the Season of Lent Parishioners are encouraged to attend daily Mass as often as possible.

We are seeking volunteers to become Eucharistic Ministers for the three Churches of the Parish. If you are willing to help, please contact Fr. Dan. A training programme for candidates will take place during Lent.

Jesus was transfigured on the mountain.

We too have moments of transfiguration.

Sometimes blessedness comes down around us,

A glory falls upon us from God and life is sweet.

In His love for us, God allows us to taste on earth,

the joys of the world to come.

Lord, give us confidence in your unchanging love for us.

Help us to follow you with courage,

And lead us to the glory that never fades.

Candle of Atonement Prayer

Lord, forgive us our many sins.

We grieve and repent with all our hearts for having offended you, for our great failings and neglect of the young and vulnerable.

We place all of those who have been hurt by the Church in any way into your loving hands and under the protection of Our Blessed Mother.

Lord, bring peace to their broken lives and show us all the way out of darkness and into the light of your Word.

May we as the people of God be more fully human, more fully Christ-like and more fully your people, that we may see the errors of the past and go forward with renewed hope and faith in Christ and in our Church.

Wisdom: The best preacher is the heart; the best teacher is time; the best book is the world; the best friend is God.

Humour: Mother – ‘Of course I am sad you’re going back to school, because I have to stay at home all by myself where it’s quiet and I can do whatever I want’!

Just a thought: To mark the Lenten Season: Spend time with this weekend’s Gospel. Be with Jesus in the desert. Ask Him for the grace to listen to Him and spend time with him in prayer during Lent. Ask for the grace you need most.
