Nineteenth Sunday of the Year

We are servants of God and of one another. We endeavour to give the best service we can!

Theme of the Weekend Readings:  We are challenged in this weekend’s Gospel to be ready for Christ’s return.

First Reading:  These are the words used by the Jews to celebrate how God saved them at the First Passover.

Second Reading: Abraham and Sarah are held as  examples of faith.

Gospel: Stand ready, we are told, for we do not know when Christ will return.

Weekday Masses:

Anniversaries:

Pat, Alice and Dave Long, Ballalog

The Feast of the Assumption of Our Lady this year falls on Thursday 15th August and is a Holy Day of    Obligation. Mass will be celebrated in Rosbercon at 6.30pm on Wednesday evening and on the feast day at 11.00am. Mass in Mullinarrigle on the feast dayat 9.30am.

Change of Mass: Please note there will be Mass in Tullogher Church on Saturday 24th August. There will be no Mass in Tullogher on Saturday 31st August or on Saturday 7th September due to holidays.

Fr. Dan will bring Holy Communion to the sick and housebound that he attends on Friday 13th September 2019 rather than on the first week of September due to holidays. Please note this later September date.

Visiting the Sick is an integral part of the life of the parish and an important part of the ministry of the priest. If you know people who are sick at home or in hospital and would like to see a priest, please contact Fr. Dan.

The Mission of the Church in Changing Times: In his letter to the people of the Diocese in May 2019, Bishop  Farrell explained that the Diocesan survey in October 2018 showed that only 24% of the people of the Diocese attend weekend Mass. He further pointed out that the Diocese has 40 Priests under the age of 75 and that number will halve in the next ten years.

At Easter this year, Bishop Farrell formed 13 Pastoral Areas or groups of Parishes to work together.  Rosbercon has been grouped with Glenmore, Slieverue and Ferrybank Parishes. Parishes will keep their own identity and will work and plan together in the years ahead. Representatives from the Parish Pastoral Councils of the Parishes involved will meet to discuss how their Pastoral Area will work and one of their tasks will be to address the reduction in the number of Masses in the Pastoral Area, with a view to allowing a  maximum choice for parishioners to attend Mass in their own Parish.

As the number of priests decline, the new Mass schedule must allow the reduced number of priests to cover Masses in neighbouring parishes. The Bishop proposes that the new schedule of Masses will be introduced across the Diocese on the First Sunday of Advent 2019.

The Sunday schedule in Rosbercon Parish will remain the same, with Mass in Listerlin at 9.30am and in Rosbercon at 11am. On Saturday evenings, Rosbercon will have Mass on the second and fourth Saturday of each month while Glenmore will have Mass on the first, third and fifth Saturday. These Masses will be celebrated at 7pm. Tullogher will have Mass on the Saturday of the first Sunday of each month, also at 7pm. At the beginning of each month those who attend Mass in Tullogher will be able to celebrate the anniversaries of their loved ones which occur that month. A special devotion will be provided.

Just a Thought: These summer weeks invite us to create time for rest and relaxation. For us at times it is a difficult challenge to find the balance between work, rest and play. To be good instruments of God’s love we must avoid being over tired, burnt out, stressed, aggressive, or closed up. We need to be rested, centred, peaceful and aware of the needs of our body, our heart and our spirit. Voices surround us, always telling us to move faster. It may be our boss, our parents, our wives, our husbands, our politicians, or, sadly, even ourselves. So we comply. We increase the speed. We live life in the fast lane. Too many of us are running much faster than we can sustain. In these summer months the invitation for us is to be relaxed and rested to entrust ourselves completely to the silence of a wide landscape of woods and hills, and/or by the sea. We sit still while the sun comes up over the land and fills its silences with light.

Reflection

Heavenly Glory

While out for an evening walk, I emerged from an area

where the streets were lit by bright lamps,

and came into an open, dark area.

It was then that I discovered that the sky was full of stars.

And I thought to myself:

How easily and how effectively the earthly lights

extinguish the heavenly ones

Lord, help us to seek the things that make us rich in your sight,

and grant that the glitter of this world

may not dim our hopes of heavenly glory.

Wisdom: He who loses wealth loses much; he who loses a friend loses more; but he that loses his courage loses all.

Humour: A man dining with some friends rose when the brandy was being brought in.’ Now gentlemen,’ he said ‘are we to drink like men or beasts?’ With one voice came the answer ‘like men.’ ‘Right,’ said the man, ‘let’s get drunk;’ the beasts always know when they have enough.’
